In an interview with public broadcaster RTVE, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said the situation in Lebanon reflects a “clear pattern” of targeting civilian life. He cited the destruction of infrastructure, forced displacement of populations, and what he described as violations of international law, alongside reported attacks on United Nations forces operating in the country.
Spain is intensifying efforts to push the European Union to suspend its association agreement with Israel, a key framework governing political and economic ties. Albares said he would formally raise the issue at a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez echoed the stance, stating that Israel cannot maintain normal relations with the bloc while “human rights are being flagrantly violated.” Madrid has indicated it will call for the agreement’s termination within 48 hours.
Separately, Albares addressed rising tensions in the Gulf, stressing that Spain would not take part in any military operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
Spain had earlier taken the unusual step of closing its airspace to US aircraft involved in strikes on Iran, underscoring its increasingly assertive and independent stance on regional conflicts.
