Sheikh Zakzaky: “Martyrdom Is the Greatest Joy in the Struggle Against Tyranny”

Leader of Nigeria’s Islamic Movement highlights the timeless struggle between truth and falsehood,

In a powerful address during the days of mourning for Sayyid al-Shuhada, Imam Hussein (AS), Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, emphasized the enduring value of resistance against oppression—even when it leads to martyrdom.

Speaking to a large gathering of mourners and devotees of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), Sheikh Zakzaky reflected on the historical and spiritual significance of Imam Hussein’s (AS) uprising in Karbala, framing it as a model for all those who face tyranny in every era.

“Even if martyrdom is the final option in the path of resistance, it remains the highest form of happiness — just as Imam Hussein (AS) chose martyrdom for the defense of Islam,” he said.

The cleric underlined the Quranic and historical context of the ongoing battle between truth and falsehood, drawing parallels between ancient and contemporary oppressors.

“From the time of Pharaoh and Moses to Imam Hussein (AS) and Yazid, history has always witnessed a confrontation between truth and tyranny,” he stated. “Today, we must recognize the Yazid of our time and, guided by the teachings of Imam Hussein (AS), choose to stand on the right side of history.”

Sheikh Zakzaky’s remarks carried particular resonance amid growing interest in Ashura commemorations across Africa, especially in Nigeria, where love for the Ahl al-Bayt (AS) continues to inspire movements for justice, dignity, and resistance to oppression.

His speech concluded with a call for spiritual vigilance and political awareness among Muslims, urging them to remain committed to the path of truth, no matter the cost.
