Protests Erupt in Homs Following Assassination of Shiite Scholar Sheikh Rasoul Shahoud

Residents of Al-Mazraa village, on the outskirts of Homs, staged a protest on Thursday evening to condemn the assassination of Sheikh Rasoul Shahoud, a prominent Shiite religious scholar and member of the Ahl al-Bayt Academic Council.

According to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the demonstration was marked by heightened security presence, reflecting growing public anger and unrest in the region. Sheikh Shahoud was shot dead earlier this week while returning from the gardens near the Al-Wa’r neighborhood, under circumstances that remain unclear.

Known for his religious leadership and his active role in organizing commemorative events for Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), Sheikh Shahoud’s killing has sparked outrage among Syria’s Shiite communities and raised concerns about the growing wave of sectarian and politically motivated violence.

Tensions have escalated in western Homs, where locals have expressed dissatisfaction with the response of security services. Allegations have surfaced that authorities may be attempting to downplay the assassination by portraying it as a common criminal act—an approach that many fear is intended to obscure the political or sectarian nature of the crime.

The incident has added to a growing sense of insecurity across Syria. According to SOHR data, at least 832 individuals have been killed in targeted attacks and purges since the beginning of 2025, including 788 men, 29 women, and 15 children, across various provinces.

Activists warn that without transparent investigations and accountability, the cycle of violence and mistrust will only deepen, especially in communities already bearing the brunt of instability and sectarian tension.
