Islamabad, Pakistan – In a message marking the beginning of the sacred month of Muharram, Hujjat al-Islam Syed Sajid Ali Naqvi, Chairman of the Shia Ulema Council of Pakistan, emphasized that mourning ceremonies for Imam Hussain (PBUH) are an inalienable religious, legal, and constitutional right of all citizens. He called for the protection of these sacred rituals, promotion of Islamic unity, and the rejection of divisive narratives.

Hujjat al-Islam Naqvi highlighted that Muharram is not merely a time of mourning but a powerful reminder of Imam Hussain’s (PBUH) stands for truth, justice, and human dignity. “Imam Hussain (PBUH) is not only the martyr of Karbala but an eternal symbol of resistance against oppression and tyranny in every era,” he stated.

He called upon religious scholars, leaders, and the public to collectively uphold the sanctity of Muharram, maintain mutual respect, and reinforce the spirit of Islamic brotherhood. He stressed that mourning gatherings are essential in reviving the values of Ashura and confronting modern forms of injustice.

“The lessons of Karbala are not bound to time. They offer practical guidance to face contemporary challenges, spiritually and socially,” he added. He further noted that the mourning of Sayyid al-Shuhada (PBUH) has transcended religious and national boundaries, uniting people of conscience around the world.

Warning against any attempt to restrict or disrupt mourning ceremonies, Naqvi reaffirmed: “No authority has the constitutional right to suppress these religious observances. Muharram is not a month of conflict or fear, but one of reflection, dignity, and spiritual revival. Any effort to turn it into a security crisis contradicts its sacred essence.”

He urged government bodies to ensure peace, respect religious freedoms, and prevent the spread of fear or sectarian tension. Additionally, he encouraged scholars and community members to cooperate with peace committees and support constructive governmental measures to ensure harmony and societal cohesion.

In conclusion, Syed Sajid Ali Naqvi called for national unity, interfaith tolerance, and rejection of extremism, urging all to stand united against the enemies of the Ummah and work together toward a peaceful, just, and enlightened society.
