Thousands of Bangladeshi Shiites participated in a large-scale mourning procession to commemorate Ashura, honoring Imam Hussein (AS), the Sayyid and Commander of the Martyrs. The grand ceremony took place at Sadr Ghat Husayniyya, drawing widespread attention for its solemnity, scale, and message of unity.
In a central address, prominent Bangladeshi cleric Hujjat al-Islam Amjad Hossain described Ashura as a symbol of sacrifice, steadfastness, and Muslim unity in the face of oppression.
“The event of Karbala is not just a chapter of history — it is a living message,” he said. “The martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions teaches us to never surrender to tyranny, to always rise for truth, and to unite in the face of injustice.”
Highlighting the crimes of Yazid’s army, Hossain said the lessons of Karbala remain urgently relevant today, particularly in resisting the threats posed by Takfiri and extremist groups that distort Islam and target fellow Muslims.
He called for vigilance, unity, and solidarity across the Muslim world, urging both Shiites and Sunnis to set aside differences and join in support of oppressed nations, especially the people of Gaza and the broader resistance movement.
Following the speech, a traditional whipping (tatbir) procession took place, moving through key locations in Dhaka — including New Market, Central Post, and Kotwali Intersection — before returning to Sadr Ghat Husayniyya. Along the route, Hujjat al-Islam Amjad Hossain addressed mourners, emphasizing that the path of resistance must continue.
“This procession is not merely ritual,” he said. “It is a symbol of our commitment to the principles of Ashura — resistance, unity, and justice for the entire Islamic Ummah.”
The ceremony was widely covered by local religious organizations and drew participation from multiple communities, underscoring the strong presence and activism of the Shiite population in Bangladesh.
