Senior Iranian Cleric Calls for Global Reverence for Religious Leaders Following Insult to Pope

Grand Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli has expressed profound regret over the insult directed at Pope Leo XIV, the leader of the world's Catholics, by the President of the United States. The senior Shia Marja emphasized that the global Christian community and religious figures worldwide must react and protest this behavior, stressing that the insult to the esteemed Catholic leader must be remedied.

In his message, Ayatollah Javadi Amoli stated that Jesus Christ (Peace Be Upon Him) is one of the Arch-Prophets and a divine sign of God. He noted that the Holy Quran speaks of Jesus and his mother Mary with immense glory and reverence, declaring them as a sign for all nations whose dignity and honor must be upheld by everyone.

The cleric elaborated that just as the Quran sends salutations upon Noah for all the worlds and describes Prophet Muhammad (PBUT) as a mercy to all creation, it similarly extols Mary and her son Jesus. This divine praise imposes a duty upon all people to maintain humility and respect toward these holy figures. Consequently, the leader of the followers of such a prophet also holds a special sanctity and deserves unique respect not only from Christians but from the adherents of all other divine faiths.

Ayatollah Javadi Amoli further stated that the Holy Quran refers to the message of Jesus Christ (PBUH) as wisdom. He explained that wisdom requires intellectuals in seminaries, universities, and cultural centers to possess sound thought and righteous motivation. He lamented that the US President, lacking both sound thought and righteous action, audaciously violated the sanctity of the Catholic Church’s esteemed leader. He called upon Christians worldwide, particularly Catholic leaders within the United States, to condemn this vice and educate the individual responsible, despite him being unteachable.

The Grand Ayatollah also linked this behavior to broader injustices, pointing to the clear and blatant oppression committed by the US President in complicity with Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran—a nation with a deep-rooted history of culture and faith. He condemned the attacks on civilians, women, cultural figures, and the schoolchildren in Minab as a manifestation of this cruelty. He noted that the Pope’s guidance and advice in the face of such manifest tyranny are invaluable, and no one has the right to object to such counsel.
