Shia–Sunni Solidarity Vital for Muslim Progress

Hojatoleslam Mehdi Mahdavipour, former representative of the Supreme Leader in India, underlined the importance of the presence of graduate students in Indian universities and stressed the necessity of reinforcing unity between Shiites and Sunnis.

Speaking at a gathering of Indian scholars and students at the Imam Khomeini (RA) Complex in Qom, Mahdavipour highlighted the need for academic and cultural engagement. “Students must attend universities and take part in teaching. This is an important gap that needs to be filled,” he said.

Referring to demographic figures, he noted that India hosts about 250 million Muslims, including some 40 million Shiites. “The majority of our Sunni brothers in India have deep love for the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), and it is the responsibility of scholars to engage with major Sunni centers and introduce the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS),” he added.

Mahdavipour also touched upon the impact of Iran’s recent operations against the Zionist regime on Indian public opinion, saying the developments had strengthened affection for the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution and for Iran among Indian Muslims.

He emphasized that unity should be the guiding principle among scholars. “Division among Shiites must be avoided. The progress of the Islamic world depends on solidarity, and if unity is established between Shiites and Sunnis, its positive results will be evident,” he concluded.
