Ghadir: The Founding Moment of the Global Islamic Resistance

Mashhad, Iran – June 12 – Hujjat al-Islam Sayyed Muhammad al-Haydari, Cultural Deputy of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, emphasized the pivotal role of the Ghadir event in shaping the political and spiritual trajectory of the Islamic Ummah during his address at the International Conference on “Ghadir and Resistance,” held at Noor Hall in the Holy City of Mashhad, Iran.

Al-Haydari described the event of Ghadir as a historic turning point marking the continuation of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) divine mission and the initiation of the wilayah (guardianship) of Imam Ali (PBUH). He asserted that Ghadir represents the origin of the global Islamic resistance front, providing a foundational framework for opposing tyranny and arrogance throughout history.

Quoting verse 67 of Surah Al-Ma’idah, Al-Haydari highlighted the divine commandment delivered to the Prophet (PBUH):

“O Messenger, convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not do so, then you have not conveyed His message…”

He noted that the significance of this command underscores the critical nature of the announcement at Ghadir.

“In response to this divine instruction, the Prophet (PBUH) gathered Muslims at Ghadir Khumm before they dispersed after the Hajj pilgrimage. Despite potential backlash, the Prophet (PBUH) delivered his message by God’s command,” Al-Haydari explained.

During the historic sermon, the Prophet (PBUH) posed the question, “Am I not the master of you over yourselves?” When the crowd affirmed, he declared:

“Whoever I am the guardian of; Ali is also his guardian.”

Al-Haydari stressed that the Prophet (PBUH) entrusted Imam Ali (PBUH) with leadership over the religious, social, political, military, and economic affairs of the Islamic nation. He asserted that the concept of wilayah was not merely spiritual but entailed comprehensive governance of the Muslim community.

“This guardianship continued through the lineage of the Imams, each adapting to the socio-political realities of their time. There was no difference in the principle of Imamate, only in the circumstances they faced,” he said.

He further remarked, “If Imam Hussain (PBUH) had lived during Imam Hassan’s (PBUH) time, he would have made peace as his brother did. Likewise, if Imam Hassan (PBUH) had lived during the reign of Yazid, he would have risen just as Imam Hussain (PBUH) did. The actions of the Imams were always in harmony with the demands of the time and the readiness of the people to accept the guardianship of Ahlul Bayt (PBUT).”

The conference emphasized Ghadir as the theological and political foundation for ongoing Islamic resistance movements and highlighted the enduring relevance of the Imamate in confronting injustice and oppression.
