The court found the two men guilty of “inappropriate treatment of a religious text” under a law enacted in December 2023, following international outrage over a series of Quran burnings and desecrations in Denmark and neighboring Sweden.
According to the ruling, one of the men, born in 1988, tore pages from an English version of the Quran and dropped it into a puddle during a live broadcast on Stram Kurs’ Facebook page.
AFP reports that the party’s leader, Rasmus Paludan, was identified as the second man involved and was also fined.
The court added that both men “acted together” in the incident. Paludan has since announced plans to appeal the ruling.
Meanwhile, the 2023 law prohibits the burning, tearing, or public desecration of religious texts.
